Welcome Home
The charmed ceiling now resembling the pitch-black sky was brightly lit with a thousand candles, all levitating over the four wooden tables that represented each house. Gryffindor! Hufflepuff! Ravenclaw! And of course, Slytherin. A new school term was about to begin and with it, a hundred new adventures and lessons were about to be learnt. Though even now, under the joyous atmosphere each new year brought, every student in Hogwarts could feel the underlying tension – an ominous feeling that was almost palpable. Many students had been held back at home where their parents believed them to be safe, even knowing Hogwarts was probably the safest place to be just then; many people had disappeared while some others had gone into hiding. New friends and allies were made in time enemies were gained, and no wizard, whether pure-blooded or not, was safe anymore.
As the Sorting Ceremony came to an end, everyone’s mood was lifted and the welcoming and cozy aura of the Great Hall started to swell up, chatter and laugher bubbling all over the room as old friends caught up and the newcomers sheepishly tried to find their way into their new House – a House they would eventually recognize as a family… because that’s what Hogwarts was, a giant home full of distinct families. The cunning Slytherins, clever Ravenclaws, nurturing Hufflepuffs and courageous Gryffindors; each House was a family, and every single one of the students considered the castle to be their home away from home.
The Headmaster’s speech was encouraging in every possible way, and although it left the aftertaste of a warning, it was rapidly forgotten as the students’ spirits were lifted by the feast. The night was a magical celebration about returning home and new students joining the school – a celebration everyone would keep dear to their hearts for nobody knew if this year, 1976, would be their last.
